What is Peri-Implantitis?

Much like gum disease, peri-implantitis is a progressive condition that affects dental implants, gum tissue, and bone. If left untreated, peri-implantitis can lead to the destruction of your jaw bone, gum recession, and even the loss of your dental implant. Peri-implantitis most often develops from infection or poor oral hygiene, but can also be caused by improper placement, smoking or medical conditions. As a periodontist, Dr. Patrick Nicosia is highly trained in diagnosing and treating cases of peri-implantitis and saving you from a failing dental implant. We offer specific peri-implantitis treatment to return your mouth to a healthy state.

Common symptoms of peri-implantitis include:

  • Red, inflamed gums around an implant
  • Gum tissue pulling away and exposing an implant post
  • Bleeding gums when brushing and flossing
  • Loose dental implant
  • Constant bad breath (halitosis)

Effective Treatment From a Specialist

Dr. Nicosia treating patient

Dr. Nicosia offers effective peri-implantitis treatment to remove disease, bacteria and tartar buildup around a failing dental implant. When performing treatment, we will gently separate diseased gum tissue from around the dental implant and bone. This infected tissue will be removed to leave only healthy gums behind. A specific protocol, according to evidence-based information, has been established to restore health to the site. If your jaw bone has become damaged from the disease, we may need to perform a bone graft. In rare cases, we may need to remove and replace the implant.
