Ruby's gum disease treatment story
Prevent Gum Disease from Returning
Millions of Americans suffer from gum (periodontal) disease, and receive treatment to effectively remove infection. However, evidence based information clearly demonstrates that treatment without frequent long term maintenance is usually not successful. Our periodontist, Dr. Patrick Nicosia, frequently sees patients for periodontal maintenance visits, which are similar to regular dental cleanings, but occur every few months. Assistance is provided during these visits to evaluate and improve your daily home care and we clean the teeth and gums and help preserve oral health so gum disease does not return.
What Does Periodontal Maintenance Include?
Periodontal maintenance is a routine deep cleaning of your teeth and gums with the goal of preventing bacteria and tartar from building up and damaging your smile. Patients who have suffered from periodontitis or advanced periodontitis will need to receive this maintenance around every three months to stay healthy, otherwise the disease will regress and surgery will be needed.
Our periodontal cleaning process includes:
- Cleaning the area above the gum line
- Cleaning tartar and bacteria below the gum line
- Root planing to smooth tooth roots
- Oral exam and possible x-rays
- Evaluation of daily home care
