Common Symptoms Of Gum Recession
Everyone wants to have a beautiful, natural looking smile, but when your gum line is uneven, your smile can appear flawed and your teeth can be susceptible to disease and damage. Gum recession is often the primary reason behind an uneven gum line and can be caused by multiple issues, including periodontal disease, oral trauma, overly brushing or aggressive brushing and flossing or a misaligned bite. When your gums recede from their natural positions, the teeth suffer the loss of bone tissue that holds and supports them. Dr. Nicosia, Houston periodontist, offers effective gum recession treatment to save your teeth and improve your smile.
If you notice any of the following symptoms, you may be experiencing signs of receding gums:
- Some teeth appear longer than others
- Spaces forming between teeth at the gum line
- Discoloration near the gum line
- Sensitivity to hot or cold drinks
- Loose or shifting teeth
Gum Grafting Treatment
One effective and reliable treatment for receding gums is a gum graft. This procedure involves taking a sample of tissue from the roof of your mouth and suturing it over the exposed tooth roots. This graft will heal to your surrounding gum tissue and blend in for a seamless and balanced appearance. Since gum tissue does not grow back, this is one of the most effective solutions for a receding gum line.
The Allen Tunnel Technique
Our Houston periodontist, Dr. Patrick Nicosia, understands the importance of patient comfort and has received training beyond gum grafting to become certified in the Allen Tunnel Technique. This is a minimally invasive treatment with faster healing time and less discomfort. Dr. Nicosia will gently make a small “tunnel” between the gums and the teeth and carefully reposition the gums to cover exposed tooth roots. The gums will then be secured in place with small sutures to heal. Many patients choose the Allen Tunnel Technique because there is no surgery site at the roof of the mouth and minimal cutting involved. The healing time is also typically faster and there is less discomfort.
