When left untreated, receding gums can cause discomfort, tooth loss, and potentially even bone loss. There are many benefits to gum recession treatment, including:

  • Reducing the risk of cavities
  • Improving the look of your smile
  • Decreasing the risk of gum disease
  • Addressing teeth sensitivity

Your consultation at Patrick V. Nicosia D.D.S., M.S., Inc. will begin with an evaluation of your gums. Dr. Nicosia will provide you with all the information you need about treatment options. We use two different techniques to treat gum recession. We can use a traditional gum graft from the roof of the mouth to replace your missing gum tissue. The procedure is moderately invasive, but we offer sedation dentistry for those who request it. Dr. Nicosia also is certified to perform a procedure called the Allen Tunnel Technique. This minimally invasive procedure involves creating a tiny tunnel in the gums where the recession has occurred and then embedding the grafted tissue into the tunnel, improving blood flow at the roots to expedite healing time.

Typically, gums grafts or another treatment are needed to repair gum recession brought on by gum (periodontal) disease. Your gumline might be visibly higher and your gums may pull back from your teeth. Exposed tooth roots may result in increased sensitivity. Less common reasons which may cause or lead to gum recession are brushing your teeth aggressively or with a poor technique, frequent teeth grinding (bruxism) or jaw clenching, and misaligned teeth. Sometimes, oral piercings (lip or tongue) can irritate the gums and cause recession. In your consultation, Dr. Nicosia will examine your gums and decide if you are a candidate for gum recession treatment.

Dr Nicosia was my dentist over 20 years ago before I moved to another city. He is the best and very knowledgeable in his field. I still have my teeth so that is definitely due to his expertise in gum surgery and teeth care. My husband recently started having dental issues and needed to get expert care so of course we made the trip to Houston to see the expert. We are both extremely happy with the dental experience Dr Nicosia and his staff provide for our family.

For the first few days after your gum recession surgery, you can expect to experience minor bleeding, swelling, and discomfort around the treated area. You can take ibuprofen or use ointments to help manage pain and inflammation. During this time, you should enjoy soft foods (such as yogurt) and take care to avoid the area when brushing your teeth. You should also avoid overexerting yourself to allow yourself to recover. We'll schedule a follow-up appointment after your surgery so Dr. Nicosia can monitor your recovery. If you have any questions about the recovery process after gum recession treatment, you should reach out to our team.
