Even though Dr. Patrick V. Nicosia makes every effort to conserve and maintain your natural teeth, there are instances where a tooth or teeth might need to be taken out. A simple extraction removes a tooth that's visible over the gums. This is normally done for a tooth that's decayed or damaged beyond repair. A surgical extraction removes a tooth that has not erupted above the gums. Surgical extractions are most frequently performed to take out impacted teeth, like the wisdom teeth, that don't have enough space to fit into your mouth. Whatever the reason for having a tooth extraction at Patrick V. Nicosia D.D.S., M.S., Inc., our staff will take care of you with the best treatment. Our Houston, TX office offers multiple sedation techniques, such as nitrous oxide and oral-conscious sedation, which means you can remain comfortable throughout your treatment. Get in touch with our team for more information or to schedule an exam with Dr. Nicosia to boost your oral health.

Extractions are performed in our office with local anesthesia on the area near the tooth being worked on. Different kinds of sedation may be used, depending on the degree of the procedure, and also to help keep you relaxed in case you have some dental worries. As soon as you're ready, Dr. Nicosia will start the procedure. To complete a simple extraction, Dr. Nicosia will loosen the tooth using a special device called an elevator prior to removal. A surgical extraction entails making incisions into your gums to get to the tooth. If necessary, the tooth might be broken into smaller pieces so it can be removed. When the tooth is removed, Dr. Nicosia will close the incision in the gums. Dr. Nicosia may write a prescription for antibiotics that need to be taken before and after the operation — in case you have a current illness, if your immune system is weak, if the process is lengthy, or if you have some other special health problems. Dr. Nicosia can perform both simple and surgical extractions.

I had a very bad experience with 2 dentists and never went back to any dentist which made me have a very bad case of gingivitis, I couldn't even open my mouth! One dentist was practically on top of me working on my tooth and another dentist was rude when I asked questions. I never went back to any dentist and was afraid of them, until years later when I was loosing my teeth.I was recommended to Dr Nicosias office and took care of me like I was the only patient there! I HIGHLY recommend Dr Nicosia and his team! They made you feel part of their family and not just dollar signs. They take the time to explain everything detail by detail, even taught me how to brush and floss correctly which I did wrong for many years. Plus they are bilingual!! Thank you Dr Nicosia for saving my teeth and being very patient!

About Us
Is a tooth extraction painful?

Many people worry about the pain associated with tooth extractions, but modern anesthesia techniques usually make the process painless during the procedure. You may experience some discomfort or mild pain after the anesthesia wears off, but this can typically be managed with over-the-counter pain medication.

How long does it take to recover from a tooth extraction?

The recovery time can vary depending on the complexity of the extraction, but most people can expect to return to normal activities within a few days. It's important to follow all aftercare instructions to speed up recovery and prevent complications like infection.

Do I need to replace the extracted tooth?

Whether you need to replace an extracted tooth depends on its location and your dental health goals. For example, wisdom teeth don't usually need to be replaced, but a missing molar could affect your ability to chew. Your dentist may recommend options like dental implants, a bridge, or partial dentures depending on your situation.
